Does this feel like deja vu? It might be, because this is a re-upload of the November 4 newsletter that I managed to delete on November 11. I’m not a perfect Substack user, so my apologies! Anyway, enjoy these lost (and now unlost) prompts.

This month sees the return of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). If you’ve never heard of NaNoWriMo, it’s the annual challenge for writers to write a novel in one month!

Sounds daunting, right?

Well, a novel is generally anywhere from 50,000 words to 120,000 words long, and like all accountability challenges, it can get overwhelming pretty quickly. I do like accountability challenges to a degree, but often about halfway through I start to fall behind and feel guilty - it’s this guilt most writers find paralysing, especially during November for NaNoWriMo and April for National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo) it feels like everyone around you is smashing their word counts or churning out poetry in a way you could only dream of.

Obviously, social media plays a huge role in this sense of panic and toxic productivity, and what you see on someone’s digital highlights reel usually isn’t close to the truth of their experience. But it’s hard to tune the noise out sometimes when all you want to do is get words on paper (or screen).

It’s why I prefer write-when-you-can challenges with open-ended prompts like Escapril, and if you’re not keen to smash out 50k+ words this month, I spotted Lovember on Instagram:

Yes, Lovember is focused on romance writing. But even if you’re not keen on the genre, you can take these single-world prompts to write-as-you-please. You may even use this as an excuse to explore Romance writing once or twice this month - who knows, maybe it’ll spark a new interest, help you to get past writer’s block, or navigate that sticking point in your latest or long-term project.

Happy writing, friends!
