It's been a long, cold, lonely winter
Get hyped for April with our open-ended prompts for National Poetry Writing Month
Hello! It’s NaPoWriMo Eve! Are you egg-cited?!
This week’s newsletter title is borrowed from Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles
If you’ve opened this email and you have no idea what NaPoWriMo is, welcome! Every April, National Poetry Writing Month takes many poets (and writers) by surprise.
The daily challenge asks you to write a poem (or something) every day for 30 days in April.
This month, I’m foregoing our weekly events and open call newsletters in favour of a weekly check-in with our write-a-along-as-you-please prompts.
Don’t worry if you’re jonesing for some Good Egg events round-ups, I’ll be releasing a bumper edition of the newsletter tomorrow, Tuesday, April 1, jam-packed with events for writers this month.
I’ll be including a few open calls with our prompt check-ins across the month. Become a paying subscriber to stay up to date as soon as our check-ins drop!
A little bit about NaPoWriMo
National Poetry Writing Month started way back in the mists of time in 2003 when poet Maureen Thorson challenged herself (and anyone who wanted to join her) to write 30 poems in 30 days. Maureen still runs this online project annually through her website napowrimo.net. Thorson’s challenge was inspired by National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo), which runs annually in November - more on that later this year.
The NaPoWriMo challenge has no corporate sponsorship, but you’ll probably see a bunch of organisations, publishers, and writers creating their own prompts and guides for their communities to get through the month and come out the other side with a whole new batch of work!
I usually opt for Savannah Brown’s Escapril as I find it looser and more open-ended than most NaPoWriMo challenges. But Escapril isn’t running this year - I know, I’m sad too. I would highly recommend checking out past Escapril prompts and giving them a try if you need an additional creative boost.
I’ve taken inspiration from Escapril to create prompts for the Good Egg Project this month. I have no expectations for you to write all day every day or for you to write nothing but poems. But if you’d like to do some writing with our community this month, you can find me on Instagram, where I’ll be sharing a batch of prompts every Tuesday in April!
