Happy Escapril and National Poetry Writing Month!
(to all who celebrate)
It’s that time of year again - the poets and writers have flocked to their desks for some daily writing fun for the whole month of April.
There are so many prompts to follow, even more words to be written and a bunch of inspiration to be had. To be honest, it’s a pretty great month to cultivate new creative habits or rejig your current writing practice.
I’ll be following along with Escapril, which is run by Savannah Brown the writer of the poetry collection Sweetdark. Escapril is designed for people to write poetry daily, but I’ve used prompts from previous years to write poetry, stories and flash pieces.

Writing every day is a challenge (and it’s hard not to feel like it’s a competition) but it’s important to remember writing challenges are supposed to be fun.
I like Escapril’s one-word prompts because they give me room to play, to be creative, and to build new habits for writing words - but there have been times when I have felt overwhelmed by the thought of writing something, anything, during a couple of these things. It’s totally normal! Our brains aren’t necessarily made to be challenged EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
If you are feeling overwhelmed…
Or under pressure to get words on a page, or you need a way to navigate all the prompts and writing advice, there’s still time to join me weekly at Lost in Leith for The Inkubator.
The Inkubator kicks off tomorrow evening, April 2, from 6-8 pm at Lost in Leith. It’ll be running weekly on Tuesday until April 30 where I invite participants to share their work and new pieces in our first-ever Good Egg Project showcase (as always performing is not mandatory, but I hope this space will help you find out if it’s for you)!
This is my first-ever writing course and I’m excited to get to meet a bunch of new writers and see some familiar faces as well. I’m looking forward to writing with everyone and to being inspired by all the ways your imaginations work.
The Inkubator is designed with building a fun and sustainable practice in mind. We’ll be kicking off with goal-setting exercises before jumping into some creative work that’ll explore getting into the minds of ourselves and our characters.
Whether you solely write poetry or prose, if you want to dabble with a drabble or plot out a pamphlet, you’re welcome at The Inkubator.
Tickets start at £25, with £15 concessions available as well. If you’re not in a position to pay, please message me on Instagram or via my website naomihead.com
Thanks so much for reading!
I hope to see you at The Inkubator tomorrow! If not, I’ll see you in May for the return of The Chicken Coop Writing Group.
Our feedback form is still open, and it’d be great to hear about all the things you’ve enjoyed and what you’d like to see when we come back next month!
Happy writing, everyone!
Naomi x
